Dogs & Human Food

“The average dog is nicer than the average person”

These days, we treat our pets like children, especially our furry friends, the dog. (I know i do anyway). We love them so much that when it comes to dinner time and leftovers, we give into them every single time they give us those adorable puppy dog eyes! Like how could you say no to that!!

We think these tasty foods are harmless to our pets but the reality of it is that most of it is doing more harm than good. Here are some examples of dangerous foods to avoid giving your fur babies. (Mostly pictures of adorable doggos. You’re Welcome!)

Chocolate!

Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs. It mainly effects the gut, central nervous system, kidneys and heart. Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness and seizures. If your dog has eaten chocolate, do not hesitate to call the vets as the outcome can be life threatening.

Did someone say CHEESE? Yes Please!!!

Now this one, I am guilty of. My dog is obsessed with cheese! I cant help it, it makes her so happy! (I’m a weak dog mam). Dogs are not really built to process cow milk. They lack the enzyme to break down the milk sugar. Many dogs are lactose intolerant so be careful when giving your pupper these products. Given as small treats every so often wont do much harm… my dog approves of this theory anyway!

Onions, Garlic and Chives

Eating these vegetables and herbs can cause stomach and gut irritation and potentially lead to red blood cell damage and anemia. Onions are toxic to dogs and signs of poisoning can occur within the first few days of consumption.

Xylitol, NAH AH!

This is found in sugar free chewing gum, sweets, cakes and diet foods. This is so dangerous for your pup. It releases insulin release in many species (excluding humans) which leads to potential hypoglycemia (lowered sugar levels) and liver failure. Can be also found is some peanut butter which dogs absolutely love! So always check the label if your going to give them the good stuff. As we all know, dogs will eat almost any food they find on the ground/floor! So next time you decide to just throw your chewing gum on the ground, think about the potential it has to kill a dog if consumed.

Bacon and Fatty meat

So because we LOVE bacon, our fury loved ones would defiantly love it too right? Of course! But unfortunately, bacon, ham and fat trimmings can cause pancreatitis. They are also high in salt which can cause a dog to drink too much water and bloat and this can be fatal.

Some safe foods for your babies dogs!

Carrots! They are helpful when removing plaque build up on your pups teeth! Great for dental health! Way better and safer than those Pedigree dentastix! Don’t get me started on those! If you care about your wee pupperinios then please read up on them! Carrots are a great alternative and a tasty treat too. Just look at how happy this chappy is!

Plain, boiled, unseasoned chicken and cooked plain white rice, for when your dog has an upset stomach is a good option. This will also do them a happ!

Cucumbers, Broccoli and Green beans are also very safe for your doggos. My pup would eat broccoli until it came out of her ears, it was her very first taste of human food!

If your unsure about what foods are dangerous for your dog, do not hesitate to contact your vets about any enquirers.

If you have suspected that your dog has ingested something potentially harmful, immediately call your vet or contact Animal Poison Control Center for advice.
